9 years ago this week (October 26, 2000 to be exact), the PS2 was officially launched by Sony. It started at a hefty price of $299, and I remember paying that much for my PS2. This system was one of the best releases during it’s generation of new consoles, and some statistics released by Sony Computer Entertainment America shed light onto just how successful this product has been.

Worldwide this console has sold over 140million units.
The amount of games on this console is almost 10,000, with a total of 500 million copies of games.

Currently the slim version of the PS2 is available in stores for $99, which is the version of the PS2 that I own today. All I can say is wow. This console has lived up to expectations for so long, and even after all this time, it still has its impact on society, still selling over 146,000 units last month. Happy 9th Birthday PS2!

I jumped from PSX/PS One to PS3. could never afford any consoles during that generation. I was all about my PC games around then. I don’t regret it at all, but damn! the PS2 is great. my brother had one, and it provided us with quite some good times.

wow its really been that long

I got the PS2 when it came out, the day of. Happy B-day PS2!

^ I know. I only adopted the PS2 two years ago. I still remember that day…

wow 9 years already? time flys by so fast

^ The PS3 would because it’s more of an entertainment console (Blu-ray player; stores videos, photos, music) but one thing’s that’s gotta definitely change for that to happen would be the price. Though that will surely cut Sony’s profits..

Whoa. Nine years. That’s a long time, and it’s still in use today. I think it’ll make the 10th year mark. But I wonder if the PS3 would surpass the PS2’s longevity.

Woo~

Sony updated the PS2 to one with an internal power brick a while ago. Maybe 9 years later, the PS3 will be $99.. But then there’d probably be PS4. :P
