The Journal of Communication published a fascinating survey on MMO habits that concludes girls game harder than guys. Of the 7,000 EverQuest II players surveyed, females players clocked in the most hours overall. The average playtime for gal gamers was 29 hours per week, with males trailing with 24 hours. The odds stayed the same even amongst the hardcore players, top female gamers on average dedicated 57 hours a week versus the 51 hours of their male counterparts.

Another interesting tidbit the study uncovered was that hours played directly correlated with the gamer’s age. The older the game, the more hours they tended to put in. The average gamer was 31 years old. This means that out of the 7,000 gamers surveyed the players involved the most are middle-aged women. Clearly, this is not the findings one would expect and definitely not the target market developers seem to be aiming at. Maybe, its time to re-evaluate the mindset the media has of female gamers and tap into their wants/needs because it looks like they’re just as serious about gaming as us guys are.
