The other day Sony slipped up and released the film Armoured onto its Playstation Store, not that big of a deal right? Well, yeah it kind of is, because its only been in theaters for a few weeks. Although Sony quickly removed the film, I can’t help but wonder if they’re finally going to play their ace in the hole: simultaneous releases both in theaters and digital distributors.
Sony owns one of the largest film production/distribution companies in the industry. They own the distribution rights for Armoured and as we’ve seen, the material is ready to be delivered to the public on a moments notice. So, maybe the couple of hours the film was up for grabs was an accident or maybe Sony was testing the waters to gauge the public’s reaction to such a thing.
Talk of simultaneous film releases is nothing new, but with Sony gaining ground against Nintendo’s Wii and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 in 2009 they may be looking for a killer feature to help push sales even further in 2010. Even if Sony is not planning on day one downloads, they may be looking into digitally distributing their properties before their theatre run is up.
Eventually simultaneous film releases will happen, it’s just a matter of who is willing to make the jump first. The old saying “If the shoe fits, wear it” seems applicable to Sony’s situation. They have the means to distribute day one releases, they have the Playstation Store as a way of distributing the titles, and they have a device (PS3) to play back the films in high definition. And now that they’ve shown the world what they’re capable of it’s time to get the ball rolling.
How do you feel about simultaneous theatre and digital releases? Would you purchase a film day one over seeing it in the theatre?

This is cool for people who want to own the movie and not go to the theaters. But this move is really bad for theaters. They struggle with getting income, since they basically run on concession stand and ad revenue.
