$60 is a lot for a brand new video game. $80 for a special collector’s edition is even worse. This isn’t news to gamers, in fact it’s a situation we face often. We suck it up, buy what we can , and then work towards saving up for our next purchase. But when is enough, enough? It’s when publishers push an $80 special collector’s edition with nothing but pre-order bonuses packaged in a tin case!

I remember the days when that extra $10-20 would get you something really special: a figurine, a cell from the animation process, hardback literature, or some other exclusive item that was only obtainable through the collector’s edition.

Now games like Fable II, Mass Effect 2, and Heavy Rain are being packaged with “specials” like in game armor, exclusive multiplayer maps, and additional character skins. All “exclusives” that are being made available to the public a few months after the games release. This leaves the only “special” thing about the special edition to be the metal case it comes packaged in. And is that really worth $20?

Not every game receives a skimpy special edition though, Bioshock 2 and God of War 3 have enticing goodies that are worth the premium price, but the norm seems to be moving towards less extravagant collectors editions.

So how do we change this? Well if you don’t mind forking over an extra Jackson for early access to free content then collect away. But if you’re sick of getting ripped off, speak with your dollars and boycott buying special editions that just aren’t… special.

^ Yes, definitely agree about the add-ons and collector editions. Also, any in-game add-ons for collector’s editions should only be a bonus (not the main extra) to the physical extras.

I especially like physical pre-order bonuses compared to collector editions. There’s no need to pay extra for the physical collectible. Awesome stuff. Of course, I’d still buy the collector’s edition if it was available (you could get the pre-order bonus with it).

Lame add-ons like special armor, guns, etc. should only require that you pre-order the regular version of the game through a store like Game Stop.  Any collectors edition packages should always come with a physical object, normally a collectible, that at least has a little bit of visual appeal.

Now if the next Assassin’s Creed comes with hidden blade wrist attachment, I’ll pay whatever they want.

Australians pay more than you pay for Collector’s Edition just for the game confused

I thought the scarborough gun included in the special edition bayonetta was cool smile

Generally a waste of money because they have no collector’s value.

I feel the same way about special editions. I only buy them if they’re really worth the extra stuff.
