A Christian group is calling for the ban of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in Maine, stating that while the State of Maine hasn’t had any school shootings, the incident is only so far away if they continue to allow the sale of violent video games.

I’m sad to say that this really upsets me, nay; it infuriates me.

Instead of fighting to fix real issues, they focus on something silly and archaic. Gaming is purely entertainment!

We don’t see those same christian groups calling for bans on action films, rock or rap music, or anything else for that matter. It seems silly, albeit contradictory considering that they are a “christian” group. By condemning something, you are condemning every single person that enjoys gaming as well, which by proxy, means you are not being christian at all.

I’m not an atheist, wiccan, or anything else of that particular sort, and my religion really shouldn’t matter to anyone in particular while reading this article, but I’m gonna throw one of my favorite bible quotes out there and see if it makes a valid point: “Take the plank out of your own eye before you point to the splinter in anothers.”

It really depends on what kind of christian you are and what kind of church you go to. I can tell you that only certain groups are like this, and make it seem they represent all Christians. I for one don’t fall onto this category.

Anyways as the camp i’m in, we know the bible is the MOST VIOLENT literature piece ever written. Ever read the armaggeddon? The wars in the book? Its everything graphic inside the bible itself. There’s condemnation of soldiers going to war either, theres lots and lots of war in the bible. Nothing could be safer than playing a game about it rather than killing terrorists for real.

It’s normal for Christians to ban something that may be harmful to people. And they do call for bans for other things such as films and music if it reaches a certain height of popularity and influence, like what Modern Warfare has achieved. (Oh they went crazy over Harry Potter) Although they’re reason for banning the game is really pathetic, it’s just a cover to convince people. They’re real reason for a call to ban the game is its entertainment being unethical for youth, which I can completely understand, since I am human and a Christian (I don’t doubt that the game is violent).

I’m actually in quite a bit of a conflict about this situation. But even after explaining their valid reasons for doing so, I’ll have to oppose their actions. Usually (at least in my experience) they just preach to the youngsters to keep their values and faith from these kind of things and highly recommends to stay away from it. In this situation, they should do the same and not officially ban the game. They should instead focus more on strengthening the values and ethics (and faith for the religious ones) of people instead of sheltering them away from this kind of stuff. People would be more prepared to deal with the everyday entertainment and at the same time keep their values and ethics if they’re more exposed to it.

I hope people won’t put a red flag on Christian groups just because of this incident. Again, they have a valid reason behind their actions, though I may not agree with their approach and methods to solving the problems.

Whew that was a lot. Hope I made some sense!
