The age old argument; PC or Console Gaming?
With the advantage of customization of hardware on the PC, also comes its downfall. Constant upgrades to graphics cards, sound cards, motherboards, processors, etc., soon leave the beast you spent $1600 on absolutely moot because of the upgrades that will continue to pile onto the top of that price tag.
Consoles provide a much more static platform, one that makes the developers work on improving the technology by advancing in-game engines and utilizing tried and true methods of making even the most archaic graphics card seem like brand new. Again, also within a console’s strength lies the weakness.
Developers are sometimes constricted by the processing power of the machines because they lack the ability to be upgraded and are forced to shrink the scale or content in the game. Although this may not be the case for very much longer because of the size of storage available on a disc continues to grow.
Where graphics are concerned, I believe that we won’t see another jump in visuals until we change pixel shape, and that seems to be a long ways away.
While MMO’s predominantly rule as the king of PC game realm, FPS and RPGs have moved there reign of sovereignty over to the kingdom of Consoleus; nobody can argue the fact that gaming was pioneered on the Desktop PC. It provided a stable platform for new technologies to grow, in turn bearing a sweet fruit that all benefit from now.
Of course, the PC offers a much more customizable control scheme, mapping different functions to different keys on the keyboard, offering a little bit more of an experience catered to each and every specific person’s play style. Allowing players the freedom to expand on a specific play style makes the person feel like that experience was created just for them, creating a much greater feeling of attachment to that title.
The debate is blow for blow, with the pros and cons weighing one another out, it really just comes down to the individual. PC gaming to me has always been kind of an annoyance, and the reason goes back to the hassle of upgrading every single time a game utilizes a new engine that makes the graphics or sound cards that were top of the line at the time of purchase moot. While I prefer Consoles, the constraints of preset control schemes and the down graded graphics on some titles almost always seem to be on the brink of a deal breaker in my case. I guess when you boil it down, it just comes to choosing the lesser of 2 evils.

The ‘double your system every game’ thing is slacking off actually. My rig is alreadly slightly behind recommended system specs - I got it for about 1K early last year - but it’s good to go for I’d estimate another year and a half. I’ll have to plug in a new graphics card eventually but until then…
Also, you can’t type up Wirebot articles on a console. :3
I accept your challenge to write up Wirebot Articles on a Console! TO THE WII! =P

Besides, I’ve not spent $1600 on a computer for ages, and with a little overclocking and a newer GPU, my current rig is good to go for a few more years.
I don’t know if I agree about Consoles being horrible for FPS. RTS Maybe but not FPS. I think the control scheme for Modern Warfare 2 works excellently well. It is more challenging when played on a controller than a PC mouse. And you don’t need to worry about messing with your graphics card to take away “unwanted lag.”

I think your analysis was accurate Dave. The round about price of $1,600 he gives is the price of the computer after its all upgraded and his point was that even after you upgrade it with top notch specs next month there will be a game out that needs twice what you just put into it. This is the main reason why I stick to console gaming… and because I have a mac and no games come out for it… and because I suck with a mouse and keyboard
Depends where you live. My country, I’d say about 2K or so. I’m a PC person, anyway - just upgrade every couple of years.

Hey! No one said it was going to be EASY, Just that it can be done. You know, like most people ripping stuff apart and then trying to piece it back together for six hours when in reality they could have done it in 10 minutes had they read the instructions.
