I think the title says it all, don’t you? Oh, I guess you want more information, and some analysis. I suppose I could do some work for you… I guess…

Nikkei Net and VGCharts are reporting that the New Super Mario Bros. Wii has sold over 10 Million Copies worldwide in a period of around seven weeks. This makes it the fastest selling single-format title ever, smashing previous record holder Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas’s time of ten weeks. So far the game has sold about 4.5 Million in North America, 2.9 Million in Japan, and another 2.9 million in the rest of the world. That’s pretty crazy, you know that?

And if you want some analysis, I’ll be brief: Mario Wii has sold amazingly well because it hits a couple of chords in the consumer marketplace that are awesome to hit. Firstly, it’s for the Wii, which is currently winning the console wars because it specifically targets casual and ‘new’ gamers while maintaining its core audience of gamers who are following the Nintendo reputation for quality - that is to say, it’s on the console with the largest install base this generation. Secondly, Mario is one of the great cornerstones of the gaming industry as a whole, and thus instantly attractive for both core and casual gamers. Thirdly, multiplayer inclusion meant it hit the rental crowd like a sack of bricks. Fourth, it has an incredible amount of fanservice for Nintendo fanboys, so they took to it like flies to… something really sweet. And fifth?

It’s a really, really good game.

By the way, how’s this tie in for Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime’s bet that NSMBWii would outsell Modern Warfare 2 on whatever platform it sold highest on? Well, since Reggis included the holiday season as well as the January sales figures, he’s probably going to win. What’s he’s going to win, nobody has any idea, but at least he should feel proud. He’s also probably rolling around in a pool of money, Scrooge McDuck style, because NSMBWii is basically Nintendo’s licence to print money.

In possibly related news, Target, Gamestop, Walmart and Best Buy are also reporting Wii shortages across the nation from their online trackers. Kind of like a return to the great Wii Shortage of ‘07 and ‘08, although not nearly as bad. Hopefully it’s just a minor problem, and the great white box will be back on shelves soon.

That’s a lot of sales, but that was expected. It’s such a classic. I love this game!

Not going to lie… I gain so much satisfaction from jumping on my brother and trying to kill him… He always manages to “bubble” in time, though. :-(

That’s so mean! =P

Wow. Guess it’s been a very huge hit! I should finally open up my launch Wii and buy this game to play! I loved the old Super Mario Bros.! :D
