Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is the best RPG for Nintendo Wii. Yeah, I realize the game actually came out first for the SNES in 1996 — so that probably says something very sad for Nintendo’s motion-controlled console.
There were so many weird little oddities about the game (from Mario’s decision to go all Dragon Quest and not speak to the toughest enemy in the game living in an alternate universe inside someone’s house), but easily the best part about Super Mario RPG as a whole were the new characters. Sure, Mallow was a re-incarnation of the Stay-Puff Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters, but the fact that he fell down all the time made him like America’s Funniest Home Videos except actually funny.
Then, there was Geno, otherwise known as E.T. meets Pinocchio. The guy — well, actually he was more of genderless sprite stuck in a doll’s body — shot stars out of fingertips, and created this strange sort of “I want to know more” mystery that I didn’t really feel again until Vincent jumped out of coffin in Final Fantasy 7. He was a character who really didn’t exist much in the Mario universe: he’s searching for an identity both on the ground and among the star sprites. Usually we just get something about the Princess being trapped or Bowser having an evil plan.
Just ask yourself this: how amazing would Geno be in Super Mario Galaxy 2? The doll seriously needs an encore (sure, he made an appearance in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, but it was hardly the same). Another good appearance would be as a playable character in the next Smash Brothers game. If Nintendo is willing to put in third-party charaters, they can talk to Square-Enix about getting the rights to Geno.
Therefore, I’m imploring Nintendo and Square to get on this: you’re on good terms again, so it is possible we could have a “real” sequel to Super Mario RPG this time featuring the characters we love? Paper Mario was a great game, but it just didn’t have the same sort of magic.
Why is that? It was probably missing someone who could shoot stars.
What game would you like to see Geno in?
