Hacking was one of the most addictive mechanics from Bioshock. Making those pipe pieces fit together perfectly so the corrosive hacking goo could safely make its way through the machine was about as satisfying as it gets. It’s like they say though, “Nothing gold can stay.” Bioshock 2 trades in Pipe Dream for a timed color matching game. When you initiate a hack a colored slider appears, you must land the swaying arrow on either green on blue to progress, red and white will leave you in bad shape. This system of hacking is vastly different from its forefather, some may love it and others will want to harvest 2K employees over the decision. Which are you?

Personally, I found the original way of hacking much more entertaining. It actually felt like a mini-game, rather than just a way to open a safe. On the other hand, the old way stopped the action and took you out of Rapture completely, sometimes for long periods of time if you got stuck. The meter hack is much more fluid, you can even hack while in the middle of an intense battle. There’s also the added element of the hacking gun where you can hack out of reach turrets and security cameras. Again, this is a double edge sword. It makes it a lot easier to hack far away objects and for those who hate flying turrets buzzing around their heads all the time it’s great (don’t we all), but I enjoyed the sneaking around necessary to bypass security cameras in the first game, something that I never do now.

Maybe I’m jaded from all those years of playing Pipe Dream in Middle School when I should have been typing papers. How do you feel about the new hacking system? Love it? Hate it?

I hated the pipe system SO much that I made my husband do it whenever I needed to hack. D< I’m glad they did away with it! I hope this new one is better. |:
