During a speech at GDC, Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama commented on the newest trend in the Final Fantasy, multiple games taking place in the same universe. He compares Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII to the other Final Fantasy spin-offs: Final Fantasy X-2 and Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. By continuing this trend the hope to expand the games universe and bolster its mythology in order to gain a more fanatical audience that not only loves the gameplay, but the world it lives in.

Looking even further down the road, Toriyama said that he is feeling a lot of pressure from fans to make a more open world game the next time around, but stressed that it would not be a good idea for such a story driven series as Final Fantasy.
