Boss battles in Final Fantasy XIII are challenging and there’s nothing you can do about it. In the past if you couldn’t get past a particular monster you could do a little level grinding until your attributes beefed up enough to slay the baddie with ease. This is not the case in the newest installment, level caps eliminate the ability to grind and force you to rethink your strategy the next time around. Do you miss grinding or are you happy to see it go?

Grinding has become an RPG staple, some find it frustrating and some absolutely love it, but none the less its been a part of the genre throughout its existence. But sometimes a change is needed and new approaches need to be taken in order to breathe some life into stale gameplay mechanics. While it is fun watching your characters progress to a level where they can manhandle even the most epic of bosses it often felt more like a chore than any thing else.

Capping level progression assures that the bosses maintain the difficulty that they were intended to have. It forces gamers to focus on strategy and to use their heads when battling rather than the brawn they spent hours increasing. It also keeps the pace of the game moving forward, in the past I have lost track of the story after spending a few days grinding my characters to unnecessary levels.

I support level caps because they help maintain the integrity of the challenge difficult bosses impose on the gamer and keeps the focus on the story. Do you miss spending hours chasing Cactaur for their insane amounts of XP? Or are you in the same boat as me and think its a beneficial restriction?

^ Even in a really interesting game, that still happens to me since I grind too much and don’t play through the game and get enough of the storyline. I hope that won’t happen with FFXIII.

I haven’t played Disgaea yet. I have the second one, but I just haven’t gotten to it yet. I have a long list of games to play.

I think the level caps would benefit me. I grind a bit too much ‘till I get bored and I stop playing the game altogether. Then after a while, I’ll want to play the game again, but I always forget where I left off, so I start over. That’s been a repeating cycle for many RPGs I’ve played. It’s a bad habit. Hopefully the level caps will fix that and let me finish the game in a even-paced manner.

I have that same problem, unless the game is really interesting. I didn’t mind level grinding in FFX but in Disgaea it got a bit annoying.

I love grinding. Ah, that feeling when you’ve totally smashed a boss. RIP grinding.

Wow, something I don’t like in RPG’s isn’t in this one! This really makes me want to get the game, and I’m not a big fan on RPG’s.

FF9 was a contrast to FFX as the latter had tons of grinding to do in Omega Dungeons (but was somewhat rewarding), as compared to FF9 where you only needed to grind in-between areas to get to your destination--your party auto-leveled up.

I don’t like MMORPGs one bit, so grinding I won’t miss in this game. Kudos raspberry Yay for level caps.

If I CAN grind then sometimes I feel like I should always be one step ahead of a boss. I think that level caps are a great idea. Totally owning a boss is not as satisfying as getting the best of it through strategy… In my opinion…
