Sure, Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver are essentially the same game as the original Gold and Silver versions. Some of the features of the new games, however, definitely make them worth the investment. One key feature that’s been added to these games is the PokeWalker. The PokeWalker, in my opinion, is probably one of the best things that has ever happened to Pokemon.

The PokeWalker is a small device that allows you to transfer one of your Pokemon onto it. The concept of the device is quite simple: you walk, and your Pokemon gain experience and happiness. It doesn’t end there, however, because the PokeWalker is so much more than just a new way to grind.

As you take steps, you also gain Watts, which can be used to search for items or encounter wild Pokemon right on the device! Items found or Pokemon caught can later be transferred back onto your actual game. Watts not used are also transferred back to the game and are used to unlock additional areas to walk in.

Probably the best part of device, however, is the fact that it really promotes physical activity for both adults and children. Rather than sitting around staring at a screen all day, people can be active and “game” at the same time. Think about it: Wouldn’t you be more inclined to go for a run if you knew that your Pokemon was gaining benefits from it? I know it sounds incredibly strange, but I’m pretty sure a lot of people out there would agree with me. I really hope that future games will start integrating features like this into their game play.

Thoughts?

I had one of these way back in the day! It didn’t work with any of the Game boy games though, it was more like a pikachu-tomagotchi-pedometer thing. It’s a good idea, in theory, most kids are just going to sit there and shake it a couple hundred times rather than actually walking though.

haha i still have mine, i had the original b/w pikachu in the little yellow gameboy casing <3

reminds me of the old digivices when digimon was still relevant.

It’s probably a half decent anti piracy measure, too. Pirates don’t get this cute little thing and all the extras!

I thought it WAS just a new way to grind. It sounds like a pretty cool idea.
