God of War was a near perfect game. Then came along God of War II, which polished everything we loved from the original and threw in some incredible new features. Can God of War III top what the previous games perfected? Well that’s up for debate, but here is a top 5 list of God of War III improvements.

5. Harpy Travel
Traveling by Harpy is an ingenious idea! What’s even better is that there aren’t just tons of Harpies flying around giant ditches at all times, usually there is just a single one perched on a far off ledge that you have to irritate with an arrow in order for it to fly at you. Not only do we get a neat new way to travel large distances, we get very smart enemies that react as if they were real.

4. New QTEs + Less Stick Spinning
Everybody has their own problems with QTEs, some people hate them because they are not good at stringing buttons sequences together rapidly and others hate them because they take the skill out of combat. One thing we can all agree on is that QTEs have gotten stale. God of War III tries to shake it up a bit with the addition of never before used QTE button combinations. Some new ones include: L1 + R1 and L3 + R3. In addition to the new QTEs they have taken away a lot of the analogue stick twirling. They are still there, but you won’t encounter them nearly as often.

3. Secondary Weapons/ Techniques are Now Useful
In past installments you could get by without ever touching your bow or other secondary weapons, but not this time around. You will constantly be switching from one secondary ability to another through the entirety of the game. Your bow’s explosive arrow ability is going to be used to solve puzzles, Helios’ Beam is going to help you uncover hidden treasures, and Hermes boots will constantly lead you to new destinations.

2. Specialized Magic for each Weapon
Both previous God of War entries utilized an elemental based magic system. You had your basic lightning, earth, and wind magic that could be amplified through upgrades. God of War III ditches that system completely. Now each weapon has its own unique magic attack. The Blades of Exile summons an army of Spartan soldiers, the Claws of Hades raise the souls of the underworld, and the Nemean Cestus unleashes a ground shaking slam attack. I think the switch works better than the previous system because it gives players more reason to steer away from the ever popular Blades of Chaos and encourages players to try out the other worthwhile weaponry.

1, God of War TV - All Gods Fighting, All of the Time
The biggest improvement to God of War III is not related to new features, or tweaked gameplay, but rather the storyline. What makes the God of War series so great is the feeling of being involved in something epic. What better way to bookend the classic tale of vengeance than to have the most epic storyline of all time: Kratos single handily destroying each and every Olympian God. I’ve never felt more of a badass in my life! I got to rip Helios head off, make Hermes a double amputee, and lets not forget about poor old Hercules, his face was pounded so hard into his skull that there was only a fist sized crater left afterwards. If you thought Kratos had vengeance in past titles, you haven’t seen anything yet!

My roommate totally just got his copy. He’s resisting the temptation right now because we have a chem test tomorrow. LOL.
