The director of the highly popular Kingdom Hearts franchise, Tetsuya Nomura, recently mentioned in an interview that three additional Kingdom Hearts games are currently in the works.

About the next title, Kingdom Hearts 3 depends on Final Fantasy XIII Versus, but development of the next title is already underway. There are two titles other than Kingdom Hearts 3 in conception, and I think I’ll release one within this year… As from next year, I want to put out a title with multiple main characters.

Nomura emphasizes that although Sora will always be the “hero” of the series, the new games will be focusing on different characters (most likely from different time settings).

I don’t know, guys… Over the two games that I’ve played, I have really grown attached to Sora as the protagonist. Seeing him grow up from his prepubescent days and become the Heartless slaying warrior that he is today was a really enjoyable experience. Thoughts?
