Riding the coattails of Final Fantasy XIII this March comes Resonance of Fate, a Tri-ace developed Sega published Japanese role playing game. Though the majority are probably all JRPG’ed out after the 40+ hours spent in Pulse, some are enthusiastic enough to start another epic adventure right after completing the first one. If that is the case, I am sure you are wondering if Resonance of Fate is the adventure you should be starting, or if you should be looking elsewhere. Lucky for you, I will make it quick, easy and painless!

The Good:

  • The battle system is said to not only be challenging and complex, but also alot of fun to play through. Using guns and actually moving your characters breathes new life into the typical stale turn based sword fighting found in most RPGs.
  • Takes a cue from Final Fantasy XIII, allowing you to retry any battle you fail at immediately. Allows the battle system to be a bit unforgiving and difficult, yet not frustrating.
  • You can save ANYWHERE!
  • Voice acting is done particularly well, thanks to the talented yet over saturated Nolan North. Music and the feel of the environment start off really engaging.
  • The Bad:

  • Boring story. Actually, most reviews even say the story is somewhat nonexistent, leaving you with no real sense of epic narrative though the cast and setting sets you up for one. This is a huge problem for a role playing game.
  • The battle system, though fun, can be inconsistent in regards to difficulty. Normal battles will be fun and engaging and then a boss fight will leave you screaming like a little girl lost in a dungeon.
  • Environments are extremely bland. Dungeons and worlds have no life to them, and are filled with gray. The Steampunk atmosphere could have been really cool but the polish and particularity just wasn’t followed through.
  • Huge learning curve. It is like the balance between hand holding in Final Fantasy XIII and this game is completely shot, being the exact opposite of Square-Enix’s hit game. It is very unforgiving.

    Final Evalutation:

    So it seems that Resonance of Fate has a great battle system, and though it is hard to master, the fun is there. Unfortunately for me, the biggest part of any RPG is its plot and characters. If the game can’t deliver on that end it is an automatic bore fest. Final Fantasy XIII might have been slow with its monotonous gameplay, but its concepts and story really latched on and kept me pushing on. Without that drive, Resonance of Fate ends up being exciting battle after exciting battle that leads you to nothing. I think the fact that the story and setting could have been great just makes it that much more disappointing. If you ask me, unless you get this baby for free, it would be an ultimate pass. Sorry Sega, better luck next time.

    Awww, it doesn’t have a good story line? It looked like it would. I’m still gonna play it though, but probably later when the price goes down.
