Limbic Software is bringing its popular iPhone game, TowerMadness, to the iPad later this year with a slew of updated features including 2 player local multiplayer, a sheep stealing robot, and beautiful HD graphics.

TowerMadness has never been your ordinary tower defense game. Where most TD games force their players to create their own paths that enemies will follow or set a fixed path for weapons to be lined along, TowerMadness gives players both options. It’s a nice little touch that mixes the gameplay up just enough and forces the player to constantly shift strategies.

TowerMadness HD features the first 2 player TD game on the iPad. In this multiplayer mode players will have to juggle between taking care of their own defenses and sending in waves of enemies to their opponents. Once again, this is nothing ground breaking, but it shows the care and effort Limbic Software goes to ensure their games are one step above the average TD game.

With the popularity of multiplayer games for the iPad (Flight Control HD, Game Table, Scrabble) I think this is a great idea. Multiplayer local co-op works so well with the 10” display of the iPad that every game benefits from it. Why more developers aren’t taking advantage of family and friends playing together on a single iPad is beyond me. Plants vs. Zombies HD was amazing on the iPad, but imagine how great it would have been if one of the many mini-games they included were multiplayer. Local co-op for the iPad is a trend that desperately needs to catch on.

As for the new robot enemy, well he’s just too cute for words. You’ll just have to watch the video to see him.
