In an interview with the Studio Ghibli owned magazine, Neppuu, renowned animator Hayao Miyazaki discussed his distaste towards, well, just about everything tech related. His newest device to hate on is the iPad, or as he call it, the “game machine-like thing.”

During his daily trips on the trains of Japan, Miyazaki usually gets irritated when other passengers read manga, play with their cell phones, and stroke their iPads in what he calls, “strange gestures.” He elaborates with, “It’s disgusting. On trains, the number of those people doing that strange masturbation-like gesture is multiplying.”

While I am a huge Studio Ghibli fan, I can’t say I appreciate his disgust with people who enjoy technology. But on the other hand I appreciate that he hasn’t incorporated any new technology into his animations like Disney has in recent years, because there truly is something special about 2D hand drawn animation that computers just can’t replicate.

It’s funny though, how Studio Ghibli is currently working on Ni no Kuni, a game for the Nintendo DS and PS3. Miyazaki is not directly involved with the title, but it does go to show that while he may not like technology all that much, he is aware of the money it generates, and no one hates money.

it’s surprising that he doesn’t likk techie stuff… I thought he would since he produces movies and stuff.. and now a video game!! well he makes lots of $$$ out of them, so he shouldn’t be a hater haha


the weird effect that it is having that results in people on trains doing strange things - would...make me hate it too :|
but i’ve always appreciated how his movies don’t follow the trend - makes them so much better to watch
