It was recently reported (by Pocket Gamer) that Nintendo and Nokia had worked together on research and development for a proposed phone-console hybrid while Nintendo was doing early research for the DS, but it was rejected after being shown to the Nintendo board of directors. In other words, Nintendo’s board of directors prevented the company from producing what would most likely have been an unsuccessful product (re: Nokia’s N-Gage).

According to an anonymous developer, “Nintendo is a very conservative company…It always has various R&D projects on the go, but most of them are eventually rejected.” Although it would have been interesting to see some of those rejected projects, it’s a good thing for both Nintendo and consumers that the company only releases fun, innovative, and high-quality products!
