Assassin’s Creed Almost Didn’t Take Place in a Renaissance Setting

Everyone who has ever played Assassin’s Creed 2 knows that it was set in the Renaissance era, right? Well what if I told you guys the game was almost going to be set in Mayan or Aztec era?

Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, ex-Ubisoft art director, was the one to release information about how the setting of Assassin’s Creed 2, early in the development age, was to take place in an Aztec setting.

“When I was still at Ubisoft the word was [Assassin's Creed II] was going to be set during the Mayan era. When I saw the first teaser later on I was like: ‘argh’,” Jacques-Belletête stated.

When it was revealed that the game would actually be set in the Renaissance period, Jacques-Belletête stated that the setting clashed with his own Renaissance theme game Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

He stated, “You can only take my word for it but we had no idea. We started Deus Ex way before Assassin’s Creed 2 by the way. I remember when word first came out I called some people and was like: ‘Wasn’t it supposed to be f**king Aztecs?’”

To me this sounds like it would have been an awesome idea but also a bad one. I mean, playing in an Aztec setting would have given the game a entire new feel to it but at a price. I don’t believe that it was okay to kind of take the idea that Jacques-Belletête originally had. It might not have been on purpose but I definitely think that Ubisoft could have discussed it more with him so that no needless misunderstandings arose.
