Review Guide

Quutris Break may look like Collapse, but I assure you they are two very different games. The objective is to use the boards’ negative space to find like tiles vertically and horizontally, as well as, catty-corner from each other.

The gameplay is a bit slower for me than I think the developer planned on, this is mostly due to the difficulty of finding pairs. My brain isn’t used to looking for pairs in this fashion so I’m not as quick as I think I should be. The pace isn’t a problem, it’s more of a personal problem in fact, but there is a problem with how fast the timer moves on the easy stage. I would assume that the goal is to clear the board in under the time limit and I was unable to clear even half of it, even after practicing for ~50 tries, before the timer ticked away its very last second.

The music is a huge problem. If you watch the Jersey Shore then you know how annoying a steady thumping techno beat can be. Now imagine if you cut down a techno beat to a 30 second sample and looped it for an hour. It would drive you crazy and it does. Thankfully, there is a toggle switch to turn off the music, but players shouldn’t have even had this problem to begin with. Music is a huge part of gaming, not taking the time to incorporate a quality soundtrack can disrupt the gaming experience. At the very least players should have the option to play their own music while playing.

Playing Quutris Break is a fun time. It has an addictive quality about it that keeps me hitting retry time and time again. The experience is a bit frustrating though, with an awful soundtrack, a timer that is too quick for its own good, and instructions that are written in broken English you can’t help but wonder what the developers were thinking. Hopefully through updates the game will straighten itself out. It is only .99, so if it interests you, I’d just go for it.
