The technology behind Microsoft’s new Kinect is just so amazing, who can resist trying to take it apart to figure out how it works? Adafruit Industries sure can’t. In fact, they’re offering $2000 to the first reverse engineer who can figure out the complexities of the high tech peripheral, which is capable of 3D sensing, face recognition, voice recognition, and depth sensing. I’ll leave out the specifics of what you have to do to get the prize money, but in a nutshell, the guys at Adafruit want to know what Microsoft knows.

Why? The company website writes: “Imagine being able to use this off the shelf camera for Mac, Linux, Windows, embedded system and robotics. Let’s reverse-engineer this together, get the RGB and distance out of it and make cool stuff!” The “bounty” was originally $1000, but was doubled when Microsoft reacted by saying they would “work closely with law enforcement” and make sure no one tampers with the Kinect. Adafruit’s response: “Don’t make us up it to $3000.”

Adafruit Industries sure is determined to get its hands on Kinect’s technology, but I’m certain Microsoft employees are paid enough to overlook the temptation of a mere $2000. Maybe I’ll take a crack it, just for the heck of it. Just kidding!
