So you’ve all heard about the Kinect for Xbox360 and how sometimes it’s not the best piece of equipment for gaming. Sure, you become the controller, but instructing the game with a combination of voice and hand controls becomes too much trouble then what its worth. However, it seems that Microsoft may be planning to increase the Kinect’s accuracy.

From Eurogamer, Microsoft is aiming to update the Kinect so that it may not only track subtle movements (such a finger and hand rotation), but also increase the Kinect’s resolution from 320×480 to 640×480.

Microsoft wants to increase the amount of data the Kinect can relay to the 360 (which is currently hindered since there is a limit to how much the console is capable of while still getting data from other places (like USB accessories)). Essentially, Microsoft seems to be aiming to increase this data flow by coming up with a type of compression technology. If this happens, that means the Kinect’s accuracy will be four times greater than what is now.

Maybe in this way, the Kinect will be a very powerful tool to program for– because let’s face it, core game developers won’t be going out of their way to program for something that’s not extremely popular with the core gamers.
