You’re going to need freebies in this game, because Freebees is a challenging puzzle flash game that has you swapping colored cells to help some poor entrapped bees escape.

Review Guide

Starting off with a bunch of closed cells, some with bees and some without, you can swap any two cells to group cells of the same color together. Grouping an odd number of cells opens them up, and grouping an even number of cells closes them, which is important because you can only swap between closed cells. The honey meter on the left side of the screen tells you how many bees you need to free to complete the level, and below that are your power-ups: undo, time bonus, and wildcard. The wildcard will turn a cell into any color you want, but it’s rare and should be used very wisely. The game doesn’t seem too hard, until you notice that you only get 60 seconds to complete each level (the timer is below the power-ups). Amateurs beware!

Freebees is fairly relaxing, with its simple graphics and old school music (which can be toggled at any time). You can pause the game whenever you want and start over, play another level, or go back to the main menu, where you can change difficulty, see high scores, or check out the rules again. You don’t have to play the levels in order within a certain difficulty, but you do have to finish a level to submit a score, which doesn’t take too long since you only have 60 seconds.

Although playing the game was fun for a while, I wouldn’t call it addicting. Especially if you tackle the more difficult levels. I was completely failing the medium levels because of the time constraint and because it was hard keeping track of odd numbered groups and even numbered groups. So if I had to point out Freebees’ weakness, the only thing I can say is that its difficulty isn’t for idly passing time.

Overall, Freebees is fun for a game that gives your brain a good workout, and I recommend it to puzzle enthusiasts. Try it here for free!
