The world of Drawn: The Painted Tower HD is both beautiful and dark, making it a great setting for a mystery/puzzle game. In Drawn: The Painted Tower, you embark on a quest to save a little girl named Iris known for ability to breathe life into anything she draws. When the game starts, you learn that Iris has been trapped in a dark tower. To save her, you solve over 70 different puzzles.

Review Guide

Given Iris’ special ability, a lot of the puzzles and clues exist within different paintings found throughout the tower. In true point-and-click adventure game style, gameplay is simple and straight forward — tap to pick up clues that are usually indicated by sparkle-emitting objects. These clues/items are used in a scavenger hunt fashion to solve puzzles that you’ll come across in the tower. The biggest obstacle here is that you don’t always have a list of items to work with and most of the time it’s up to you to figure out what to do with the items you possess. When solving puzzles gets tough, you have the option of relying on Frank, a stone guardian who offers you hints along the way. If you find yourself hopeless at times, you have the option of skipping puzzles, but only after a certain amount of time. Judging on the amount of times I had to rely on hints, I’d say that the Drawn: The Painted Tower is moderate in difficulty — enough to keep you playing to the end. Some puzzles are easy and some require a little work and brain power.

What I really enjoyed most about Drawn: The Painted Tower was its graphics and sound. The graphics are dark and beautiful, in only a way that I think Tim Burton could pull off. If Tim Burton were to produce a casual game, I think Drawn: The Painted Tower would resemble something like it!

The one thing I wasn’t a fan of in this game was the constant travelling through the tower. Going from point A to point B in the game was not without a ‘loading’ period that I feel could’ve been shorter. An improvement for this would be to include a menu on the user interface of all the scenes you’ve previously visited. From that menu, you can easily access the scenes you need to get to. With all the load times and travelling, I really felt like I was going up and down a tower.

That aside, it’s still a fun game to play, even if just for the graphics on the iPad.
