So the “Wii 2” (for a lack of a better successor name) has picked up momentum in the rumour mill. Does it exist? If so, then is it going to be another white box that seems to be indestructible? Not a lot of word has gotten out about the Wii 2– just rumours and hearsay. Though it seems that Nintendo may reveal more in the coming months.

For now, these are the rumours surrounding the Wii 2:
- Wii 2 is set for an unveiling at E3 2011 according to industry chatter
- Wii 2 will be HD and IGN believes it will be capable of 1080p output.
- It’ll have a new-style controller which is rumoured to have a built-in touch-screen.
- Back in August last year Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata said the Wii’s successor would ’surprise people’. So clearly a successor concept design was finalized by then.
- Wii 2 HD will be “significantly more powerful” than PS3 and Xbox 360. The PS3 and Xbox360, as of this year, will be running on a half a decade’s old technology. (Though according to most developers, the true potential of the PS3 and 360 have yet to be realized.)

It seems that Nintendo wants to recapture the core audience, and perhaps break the tie between the PS3 and Xbox360. It may still be inherently possible that Nintendo is keeping the casual-gamers in mind. But a new next-gen console will be extremely tough on the developers, who are still focusing on the 360 and PS3 capabilities. If a Nintendo next-gen console does come out, then it may take a while for it to be developed on. I mean think about it– multiplatform on three next-gen consoles?
