As Nintendo president Satoru Iwata reveals, the Wii U will not have the capability to play DVD or Blue-ray movies. The reasoning behind it was that he says people already own devices that do so. It wasn’t worth the cost to built that function into the console and have to deal with the patents on that technology.
But that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to watch movies with your future Wii U at all, since word is Netflix is trying to get placed on practically every screen console. So maybe instant streaming will be arriving with the Wii U’s debut next year.
Maybe even some type of stream to its controller screen? We’ll see how that goes, but I think that would be a pretty cool feature to have developed.
