Sega Pass, an opt-in newsletter service and account for Sega’s online gaming system, has been announced to have been hacked. An email was sent to all members warning them of an “unauthorized entry” into the SP database.

Part of the email:

We have identified that a subset of SEGA Pass members emails addresses, dates of birth and encrypted passwords were obtained. To stress, none of the passwords obtained were stored in plain text.

So no huge harm [known] but Sega’s taken the initiative to reset everyone’s passwords anyway. Besides passwords, emails and birthdates may have been exposed but thankfully, credit cards are not part of the data (most of the network is just a forum).

For the moment, the site is on pause until Sega finishes their “improvements” - my guess would be on new security features.

Adding to the list of hacked sites: Sony, Nintendo, and Citigroup - who will the hackers strike next? It’s pretty scary to think that no one is really safe.
