Weird, right? But that’s exactly the current predicament of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII. Two games that internet spies have discovered to be uploaded on the digital distribution site, Steam, by Square Enix.

The reason why they’re “unplayable” is because the PC ports that the game was developed under seems to have been forgotten and are only still alive, thanks to their dedicated fan community who are doing what they can to keep them running on a modern system.

The stranger thing is that Square Exix even came back to the game in early 2010, to make edits in the programs that would make them playable on a modern PC. But then after that, plans for its move to a release just seems to have been abandoned.

Somehow the temperamental nature of the game seems to have been to much to deal with that it could be the reason why Square Enix gave up. But I’m sure there are still more than a few FF fans that wish they didn’t.

I’m sure there’s a small chance that the game could be revisited and tweaked for a quiet release, but for now, it’ll sit in Steam untouched.
