It’s kind of a no-brainer that if you mention epic RPGs, Final Fantasy is bound to come up. Square Enix has just announced that they’ve been able to reach their goal of 6 million units sold for Final Fantasy XIII, further exemplifying the franchise’s strong popularity.

Producer Yoshinori Kitase gives us a bit more detail and the reasoning behind the latest Final Fantasy XIII-2 creation:

If we were going to make a numbered title, obviously we’d have to make it from scratch, and that takes a really long time. Final Fantasy XIII only came out in March of last year, so literally only over a year, so it’s quite a short turnaround. Because Final Fantasy XIII has been so popular, we’ve also enjoyed commercial success – shifting over 6 million copies – so instead of taking a long time to make a new Final Fantasy title, we wanted to make a direct sequel

Pretty reasonable and as much as gamers were a bit wary on FFXIII-2 instead of a FXIV, there’s enough of a fanbase to support it no matter what.

Were you guys one of the 6 million FFXIII owners?
