A new announcement from Blizzard Entertainment has announced that the Korean Global StarCraft 2 League (GSL) will be having their October finals at Blizzcon this year!

This goes alongside the Global Battle.net Invitational that was already set to be at the annual gaming convention by Blizzard. Combining the two tournaments, there’s going to be almost $300,000 on the line.

With the GSL, it generally features some of the best and most competitive StarCraft 2 players in the world. With this recent announcement, it will also be the first time the event will have taken place outside of Korea.

Mike Morhaime, CEO of Blizzard, has said, “We’re looking forward to witnessing the high level of competition between the pro gamers participating in these events alongside our attendees at BlizzCon and the viewers at home.

Mr. Chae, director of the GSL, has hopes for the SC tournament to really become a global eSports title for all types of gamers to enjoy, “I hope GSL becomes a festival for all the eSports fans around the globe.

I don’t want StarCraft 2 to become an e-sports title like StarCraft Brood War which was excluded to people inside of Korea. Currently, Korean gamers are competing with Korean gamers inside of Korea. However, thanks to the emergence of frequent foreign tournaments, they are willing to fly over to compete. They are also very impressed and are enjoying the support from foreign fans.

Blizzcon 2011 is set to be held in Anaheim, CA from October 21-22. Though for those who are unable to attend, they’ll also have all the tournament battles online at their website.

Very exciting news and great for any US fans to see some of their favorite SC2 progamers battling right before their eyes! Those that can attend this year are so lucky…and who knows? Maybe with good reception, future GSL tournaments will start expanding to be held in other countries more often.
