It seems as though the Nintendo 3DS wasn’t doing as well as Nintendo wanted it to. In fact, it was enough for them to institute a pretty sudden and massive price drop. Now you can pick up the $249 3DS for just $169.99, starting August 12.

Considering it was released this past March, usually it has to be a year+ before any price cut usually comes. But this move, which is also being called “the swiftest and deepest price cuts for a handheld in recent memory” will make more people tempted to get one, especially if they were wary from the price before.

But for those who purchased one before this recent August markdown, they’ll be able to download 20 free games from the 3DS eShop. Available after September 1, expected titles are suppose to come from the NES Virtual Console games, which includes classics like Zelda and Super Mario Bros.. Or Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games, like Yoshi’s Island and Metroid Fusion, which will be available a little later.

For Japan, the cut is suppose to go from ¥25,000 to ¥15,000. In Australia, it will go from AUD$350 down to AUD$250, and Europe has no exact price yet but a Nintendo rep has said that it will be cut “around a third.”

Any non-3DS owners think they’ll be tempted this time around?
