iPad Review: Chocohero

Oh no! Smoresdom, which is the ever-so wonderful kingdom of sweet and treats, is being invaded by a flood of milk! Smoresdom’s inhabitants, the cute Chocobits, are in need of a hero, so it’s time to call upon the Chocohero, Chipster!

Chocohero is a game full of simplicity and cute. I love cute, which is why I was so intrigued by this game. And like I mentioned before, it is a simple game. All you need to do is tilt your iPad left or right keep Chipster moving. You go around, tilting your iPad to move him to save his little friends, get coins, and stars for power-ups. You can hold the iPad however you want when you tilt it, so you can hold it parallel to the ground or facing you. It makes no difference.

Each “level” has objectives, so to speak. There are three different objectives for each level and they can range from saving “x number” of friends to “get x number of coins”. You try to go into as many worlds down as possible before the flood of milk catches up to you. If you complete all three objectives before dying, Chipster’s cape will grow long and allow you to obtain more points faster. Don’t worry, unlike those superheroes in The Incredibles, Chipster won’t have his cape be caught by anything. Unless, of course, you’re talking about the flood of milk. Now that’s a little different.

As Chipster, you can find a few power-ups along the way:
- Coins: The more coins you get, the more upgrades you can obtain. Each upgrade has its own price range, so try to get as many coins as possible.
- Chocobits: These are the cute little friends that you must save. The more you save, the more that help you along the way. They tend to break any “cake” barrier in the way so that you have a smooth ride down.
- Stars: Grab one of these stars and initiate “Fever Mode”! “Fever Mode” is where Chipster turns into a little tornado and goes quite fast for a few seconds. During this mode, any Chocobit you pass along the way immediately gets saved by you.
- Gifts: If you hit one of these gift boxes, you get more coins. Which is good, because you can then get better upgrades.
- Clock: Freeze time (and the flood of milk!) to gain more time to escape that flood.
- Magnet: Hitting one of these magnets will pull coins towards you.

It’s a fun game overall. If you turn the sound on, you’ll hear Chipster make sounds, such as munching on candy, going super fast, and having fun move around. The music does get a bit annoying after a while, so perhaps it’s not something you want to have blasting out of your iPad. In addition, the game does leave you a bit disoriented, hence why you don’t want to look at the screen for too long. And be forewarned: sometimes, going out of the screen will cause you to die. I don’t know when or how because sometimes I go off the screen and I die, but other times I survive. It’s a bit puzzling. And if you’ve ever played “Escape the Red Giant” here on Ningin, you’ll find that it’s quite similar. Sweets and cute aficionados, this game is totally for you! You’ll keep playing this game non-stop! (Or if you’re like me and let your mom play after you play, you’ll listen to her squeal in delight at the cuteness.)
