iPad Review: Whale Trail

Looking for something peaceful and relaxing, yet a bit stimulating? Check out Whale Trail and ride a rainbow trail with Willow the Whale as he goes to fly above the clouds and escape the grasps of the evil Baron von Berry as he makes way through 7 colorful kingdoms.

As Willow the Whale, you maneuver with your finger glued onto the screen and try to capture as many of the colorful fuel bubbles as you can, which allows Willow to fly longer in the air. Tap and hold your finger to allow Willow to move, release your finger and let Willow go down. Dodge those thunder gas clouds that sap away Willow’s fuel if you let him touch those thunder gas clouds. Ruh-oh!

Gameplay is fairly easy and requires only the use of your finger, as previously mentioned. I did forget to mention that if you hold your finger down long enough on the screen, Willow will complete a loop-do-loop, which is definitely beneficial if you’re trying to catch some more bubbles. Powerups can be found along the way, such as the colorful stars that, when 7 are collected, will allow you to go into a frenzy mode (more on that in a bit), and that duo-colored spiral star that allows you to move faster and higher.

Frenzy mode, which I alluded to earlier, is what the name implies: Willow goes into a frenzy. Not crazy frenzy, but good colorful frenzy. Basically, in this mode, Willow is untouchable and all the bubbles he whizzes by will be attracted to him. In addition, hitting those thunder gas clouds while in said mode will give you a bonus of x number of points, based on the multiplier that you have. Speaking of the multiplier, it will increase slowly every time you get bubbles, but will decrease in half (of what I’ve seen) to the previous level if you hit a thunder gas cloud. I knew those clouds were bad news!

Whale Trail is quite a simple game. It’s easy to learn and it’s quite relaxing. How so? The music, which reminds me of hippies for some reason. It’s peaceful and allows your mind to take a break. The only time you really need to use your brain is when you have to dodge and carefully make your way through those masses of thunder clouds. The graphics are quite cute, so to speak. I just love anything cartoonified. And the game zooms in and zooms out depending on where on the screen Willow is. If he is high above the clouds, he’ll be a little speck in the sky. If he is near the bottom cloud (which you try to avoid as much as possible), he’ll be quite big.

When I first saw the game, I didn’t think I would be interested at all. After all, it looked a little boring. But I was engaged in the game because I wanted to go as far as possible without dying. And who wouldn’t? It’s also a nice family game and it will keep you occupied for a while. With all the achievements that can be had in the game, looks like you’ll be playing it for some time! I know I will be. I haven’t run into any problems or bugs in the game, which is always a plus. We want games to run smoothly, don’t we?
