TorchlightThe list of gaming companies that are against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) continues to grow.

On January 12, Torchlight developer Runic Games stated that it is going to be joining Epic Games and Riot Games in standing against SOPA, as well as the Protect IP Act (PIPA).

Runic Games stated, “It is clear that the scope of the proposed legislation would give unnecessarily broad power to large corporations while reducing the rights of individual citizens–and it won’t even stop software piracy. We at Runic Games oppose the SOPA/PIPA legislation and we encourage you to do the same.”

Although there are many companies against the Act, there are still those who are not. According to the ESA (Entertainment Software Association) - the game industry’s representative body - the game industry requires effective protection against the illegal acquisition of games and those who facilitate it and so it is in full support of SOPA.

Others that support it say that it offers necessary protection to content creators.

At first I thought that this would be something people would be for, but now I’m not so sure. The fact that gaming companies don’t want an Act created to stop people from pirating their games kind of makes me curious though. I hope this all gets figured out soon.
