You read that right, folks: Sony has recently announced that PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts will renamed Sony Entertainment Network accounts as of February 7. This bit of news happens to be coinciding with an update to its Privacy Policy and Terms of Service. But don’t fear, because other than the name change, there shouldn’t be any other changes to service.

The rebranding of accounts falls in perfect timing for the US launch of the PlayStation Vita, a cross-media device aimed at more than just gamers. As for comments regarding the transition, the company released a statement:

“This transition is based on Sony’s goal to enhance its unique digital entertainment offering. As a series of these activities Sony started last September, PlayStation Network will be aligned with ‘Sony Entertainment Network.’ This helps us get closer to our goal of establishing a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music and more, all accessible from one convenient account.”

As of now, only PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita system owners will be going through this update. PlayStation Portable owners will not have to worry, for the moment. The good thing about Sony Entertainment Network accounts is that they’ll give you access to Sony’s Music Unlimited, Video Unlimited and PlayMemories Online (currently known as Personal Space).

What do you guys think about the name change? Personally, for me, I’ve grown up with PlayStation my entire life. PlayStation ranks right up there with Power Rangers and Pokemon, so this whole update is kind of making me nostalgic.

Wow, sounds good to me! Oh wait...about the name change...I don’t really like it. I’m so used to PlayStation.

I got their email for the change. I don think it is such a big deal.
