“If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it” seems to be Relic Entertainment’s philosophy with the follow up to this highly regarded strategy game.

As is natural for any sequel, the “Company of Heroes 2” developer hopes to expand on what made the original so great by creating an even more realistic and immersible experience with the absolutely stunning Essence 3.0 Engine.

In the teaser trailer you get what feels like a history lesson as the narrator rattles off the astronomical death toll figures, and at the end a very short clip of the actual game. I will admit that the video has some impressive visuals and AI, but the narrator’s tone kind of ruins it. The words themselves express remorse for the loss of life, but the way they were spoken seem to do nothing of the sort.

Company of Heroes 2 still looks amazing, but perhaps there are better ways for THQ and Relic to market the game than to call attention to the fact that “Russia lost nearly 11 million troops and more than 15 million innocent civilians” in such a crass manner.

Here’s hoping that, next time, they are a bit more sensitive with such delicate subject matter or, possible, skip the history lesson and show more of what everyone wants to see, like…the game.
