*cue the Mortal Kombat theme song* Ah, this game that we played back as kids. Where we’d stay at the arcade, trying to defeat our line of enemies while our parents tried to shoo us out of the arcade and back home. Or if you’re like me, your dentist had this game in the arcade room in the office and you’d play the game until the receptionist called you into the room to have your teeth checked. Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is at your mercy on the iOS and with comes the nostalgic memories.
UMK3 (as I will abbreviate it) returns with all 23 original Klassic characters and comes with many game modes as well as customizable (or how they put it, kustomizable because everything becomes so much ‘kooler’ with a k) controls and updated visuals that use the full capabilities of Retina Display. Not so sure on the latter part, which I will get to later. You’ll also get to play on the 16 klassic arenas with hidden parts that you can unlock while playing in Arcade mode. And not only that, but you can do battle against friends through WiFi or Bluetooth, whichever one is your fancy.
I will get this out of my system: the controls suck. The graphics suck. Electronic Arts, I get that you’re trying to capture the essence of the original game and keep it almost the same while bringing it over to the iOS. No, seriously, I understand. But I couldn’t get combos to work (or how I like to call it, ‘button mashing’ because I can’t seriously remember the exact combos when I’m trying to kick butt) and the graphics stink. What Retina Display? What amazing visuals? Yeah, 3D and whatnot, but all the characters just looked so choppy that I lost interest quickly. Maybe it’s just not my cup of tea but I’d expect something a little more from such a ‘klassic’ game.
You definitely won’t see me playing the game anymore - I was so disinterested that I stopped playing after 10 minutes. And I rarely do that with games. The moves were always a bit…unnerving and it’s really not for me. I’ll stick to my cute games, thanks.
