Review Guide

In this game, you have two choices: you can be a fighter or you can choose to be a thief (your character will look different depending on which type you choose). It’s really your preference - I chose to be a fighter because he looks cooler? It’s really all about your preferences. You have to help out the village by going to the dungeons and defeating the monsters that crawl there as well as completing the objectives, such as defeating x number of monsters, obtaining x number of items, defeating the boss, etc.

You can also customize your armor and weapons for better and unique weapons, with stars on each weapon telling you how good the customized item will be. With the number of different enemies to be found, you’ll have to train your reflexes because guess what? You’ll need to tap that bar when it’s either in the orange or red sections. Hit the black section and you’ll miss in your attack; hit the silver bar and you’ll get hit with a heavy counterattack. And that’s not all - some monsters require faster reflexes (and can even paralyze you, making attacking a bit agonizing), while slower creatures require you to be patient (I’m looking at you, snails).

MapleStory: Cave Crawlers is a simple, yet addicting game. You’ll find yourself exploring the dungeons, trying to find the next floor up and the items to be found each level. There is also a monster detector that tells you how close you are to a monster, though when I encountered a monster for the first time, I jumped because my character’s expression changed and the battle music didn’t help much. You’ll also want to explore all the parts of the dungeon so that you may get a better score because you can’t go back down a floor. Sucks, doesn’t it?

All in all, I enjoyed this game a lot, though I’m not sure whether I liked the method of attacking. Your reflexes must be quick to hit that red bar over and over again, and it doesn’t help when they’re so tiny. Oh and it’s best that you hit that red bar because when you get to the boss, that will be the difference between you dying and you surviving.
