iPod Touch/iPhone Review: Gum Drop!

No, no, you can’t eat these. You only wish you could, right? From Chillingo comes the fun, yet hectic game known as Gum Drop! It’s nothing like it sounds like, actually.

So what does this game actually entail? It’s kind of an inverted ‘memorization’ game. Basically your task is to find the words listed on the gum drop critters on the left and match the words to their correct pictures on the blocks. You think it’s simple? You haven’t met the fun part yet.

Sure, it seems all simple, with what the large blocks and all in the beginning. But as you progress further and further into the game, the blocks fall down faster and they are also smaller than the preceding level’s blocks. Bet you didn’t see that coming. Oh, and I did fail to mention that once the blocks fall down faster and become smaller, the gum drops start swelling up faster. See, you need to find the corresponding pictures quickly; otherwise, those pesky gum drops will swell up so fast and the game is over. And we wouldn’t want that now, would we?

You can get huge combos simply by completing the different formulas for said combos - such as getting rid of the blocks altogether on one level. With over 100 different objects and words, you can play this game for a long time until your eyes start watering up and your vision blurry because you’re straining your eyes to match the words to the pictures. Fun times for all.

This game works well for those who are fast and have quick reflexes. But sometimes, just sometimes, your brain makes the connection quickly, but you are stuck trying to find the corresponding picture for a bit. It’s happened to me quite a few times and I’d just stare blankly at the screen, desperately trying to find the word before the gum drop explodes.

Gum Drop! is a fun game indeed and does provide a nice relaxation period for those who are tired and need a study break. Though, I must warn you, your heart rate will increase so this might not be the best of games to play. But you can play the game, then challenge your friend next to you, hee! And with the cute graphics, why not? Enjoy the simplicity of the game!
