Bad stuff went down at Infinty Ward, the creators of Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare franchise, over the last few days. G4TV broke the news initially with reports from sources close to the studio that heads of IW Vince Zampella and Jason West met with Activision, and had not been seen since. After that, a bunch of ‘bouncer types’ turned up outside IW’s offices and refused to say why they were there. Jason West said he had been fired. Then Activision filed a US Securities and Exchange report.
So what exactly happened? More »
According to an article on GamesIndustry, many use game retailers are speaking out against the new marketing move that EA has subscribed to. Project Ten Dollar is EA’s fancy code name that stands for their plan to include, on average, $10-15 worth of DLC in all new packaged games. This was put in place by EA brainchild John Riccitiello, who says it will deter consumers from purchasing used copies and instead buying new, fully supporting the developer and publisher of the game. But not all agree this is actually what will happen. More »
Call me weird, but back in the day when Medal of Honor was around I enjoyed that series much more than that of Call of Duty. It was only after MoH went MIA that I started getting into CoD. Since then my heart has been stolen by Infinity Ward and it’s going to be a hard task for the Medal of Honor reboot to win me back. But these new high-res screen shots certainly are helping! More »
More damnable financial news. Yes, I know all the money talk is boring, but this is important to the future of the industry, people! Stay with me. Despite projecting a US$450 Million dollar loss for 2010 for the EA Partners distribution lineup, David DeMartini - the General Manager of the program - told Gamasutra last Friday that the third-party program continued to ‘be a high priority’. Losses projected were instead a sign of the variability of the distribution business, rather than a fall in the profitability of the program as a whole. What’s that mean? Well, basically, that EA’s still going to be distributing games for other companies next year. More »
Hey, that’s kind of funny, I wrote about this less than a month ago. Oh well, I can always write about it again with more details, right? We’re talking about combating the Second-Hand market again, we’re talking about fighting the good - or, rather, profitable - fight. But now it has a fancy codename that sounds like it was made a secret organization that controls the entire world: Project Ten Dollar. More »
Snow isn’t always a bad thing. You get off of school and work gets canceled. It looks beautiful, for a bit at least and you have some time to catch up on some of thing you’ve been putting off. For me it was Hasbro’s Family Game Night. Being separated from my girlfriend kind of stunk, but we made the best of it with by playing countless hours of board games over PSN! More »
EA leaves off the PC release of Dead Space 2 from its official 2011 release line up announced yesterday. According to an EA representative the PC port of Dead Space did not meet their sales expectations, so they will not be making that mistake again next year. While EA neglects its PC fans, PS3 and Xbox gamers can rejoice in knowing that the once Wii exclusive Dead Space: Extraction will be hitting both PSN and XBL later this year for $15. Not that bad of a deal knowing its Wii counterpart sold for $40 when it first came out. More »
In more finance-company-related news, gaming powerhouse Electronics Arts has recently released the results for the third quarter ending December 31st as well as their lineup for the fiscal year 2011 (which begins in April 2010, because they’re talking crazy business-man-talk). Highlights include EA being the largest packaged goods publisher in North America and Europe, operating profits being projected to be around US$925 million to US$1 billion, and the release of five titles with Metacritic ratings of 80 or above. Of course, if you don’t care about their money, you might be more interested to know what they’re thinking of releasing next year. Subject to change, of course. More »
February 9, 2010 is an epic day for gaming. It’s the day we finally get the chance to unload our bolt gun on strung out splicers inhabiting Rapture’s crumbling metropolis in Bioshock 2. While a return to Rapture is exciting , it’s not the only February 9th release worth mentioning. Camping alongside you at thousands of midnight launch parities will be hordes of hell bound gamers eagerly awaiting the release of Dante’s Inferno. Most likely you already have your mind made up, but before you commit your hard earned $60 check out our Pros and Cons for this weeks Tuesday Showdown! More »
Dante’s Inferno isn’t actually out yet but you wouldn’t think that to look at EA’s marketing machine. While a game based on classical literature doesn’t sound like everybody’s cup of tea, buzz around the business is that this is going to be one of EA’s hits of 2010. From the studio that hit it big last year with Dead Space, Dante’s Inferno has also had the support power of EA’s creative, influential and ultimately well-funded marketing department. They’ve been doing some weird stuff - sending out packages representative of the seven sins to game reveiwers, for instance - but nothing quite as expensive, or hopefully as market-capturing, as their incoming Superbowl Ad. Industry Gamers recently sat down with the executive producer of Visceral Games, Jonathan Knight, to talk. More »
If you’re a PC Gamer or an RTS veteran, you might have heard of one of the great juggernauts of the strategy genre; the Command and Conquer series. Did you enjoy crushing the nefarious Brotherhood of Nod in your mammoth tanks while combating the fast-spreading Tiberium infestion, or listening to the insane rantings of a man named after the First Murderer? Well you’re about to do it all over again, as EA and Gamespot finally releases the C&;C4 Beta to the general public. More »

From Swandiary: I never thought a Twilight game would be something beyond a board game until EA and DICE’s Battlefield Heroes, an online first person shooter game including vampire vs. werewolves content. As an non-gamer, the idea of a Twilight tie-into a video game makes sense. Vampires are currently the trend and it’s showing. Check out the game’s trailer: More »
I sat in my living room, reading a book and cautiously peeking at the end of my drive way hoping that the Fedex truck would come around the corner and bring me awesome in a box. Sure the shipment came a little late, but it still came.
30 hours later, after 1 sit down, I had beaten Mass Effect 2. More »
By now we’ve all heard what the analysts and game developers think about the iPad, but what about the gamers? How do are we feel about the new tablet? We are thrilled, or at least should be. Since forever clever gamers have been taking apart their coveted consoles and resembling them into more compact shells so they can take their gaming on the road without suffering the drawbacks and limitations that come along with a portable gaming system. Most of the time these contraptions become pieces of fanboy high art, being much too bulky for logical usage. With the iPad, Apple has simplified our vision and gathered support from many developers. This has got to be one of the most successful uses of DLC I’ve ever seen.
When you purchase Mass Effect 2, you receive a Cerberus Network Card; activating the service using the one time use code that comes on the card allows you to download free bonus content and provides a streaming news feed that updates you about paid DLC that will be available in the near future, upcoming patches, not to mention a spectrum of other goodies. Giganto-Behemoth-Publisher Electronic Arts is apparently pressing forward with a new strategy first encountered with last year’s releases Dragon Age: Origins and The Saboteur, namely launch day DLC. But not just any launch day DLC; instead, we’re talking rewards for original purchasers of this month’s surefire hit, Mass Effect 2. Basically, it’s added value for people who buy the game new - and pour money into EA’s coffers. More »
Twenty-one hours and a fantastic story later, this game didn’t just blow my mind; it got me ready for Mass Effect 2.
Of course the title lets us know that Bioware plans yet another epic trilogy, and I can honestly say that my appetite has only been wet by the way this game handled. The A.I. was a little finicky at times, and even after changing the tactics around on my teammates they would still run headlong to hell and completely disregard the massive stockpile of potions.
One of the things that Bioware is getting shockingly good at, is giving you insanely hard moral choices to make throughout the game. I found myself putting the controller down to go outside and think about my decision, taking all the possible repercussions into consideration. I loved the character relationship addition to the game, allowing you to give gifts or converse with various party members to either gain or lose favor in there eyes. This greatly changed the game in the middle for me, because of my not so favorite characters ended up trying to shank me in a back alley. More »
Strange as it sounds, it doesn’t look like Gamestop is going to be getting the Limited Edition of Mass Effect 2; at least it’s not listed on there website. More »
