PS3 owners got their second taste of Mafia II DLC yesterday with the release of Jimmy’s Vendetta. It’s a first taste for Xbox 360 and PC owners though who did not get the pleasure of playing the PS3 exclusive Jimmy’s Revenge DLC. The new DLC features arcade style gameplay where you are scored by the amount of kills and explosions you make, as well as, your driving performance. Compete with other users to gain a spot on the leader boards. More »

For years the video game industry has strived to make video games as close to blockbuster films as possible. A feat that many thought would never come to fruition. “You can’t be the director and still feel like an active audience member,” they claimed. The two experiences were thought to be separate entities, like oil and water. But recently we have witnessed that gap slowly becoming bridged with the help of titles like Bioshock, Uncharted, and Heavy Rain. Mafia II is the latest piece of scaffolding. We all attended the Corleone Wedding, we witnessed Tony Montana rise to the top, and we were dumbfounded by how the Sopranos ended, but it wasn’t until now with Mafia II that we had the chance to experience the mob scene first hand. We all know that it’s important for a game to satisfy players and attract a (preferably) big and loyal fan base, for the prevailing reason of raking in revenue and ensuring that the studio doesn’t go out of business due to poor sales. While 2K Games isn’t in danger of going out of business, gaming analyst Michael Pachter predicts that Mafia 2 probably won’t be able to scrape up enough profit to make its 6-year development period worthwhile. I’ve said the term “cinematic shift” enough times in the Mafia II diary posts that the CC would let me coin the phrase, so I’ll try my hardest only to mention it this once. Chapters 9 and 10 are when Vito and Joe finally get made. This shift changes everything yet again. No more slumming it in cramped apartments, no more leather jacket, and definitely no more small jobs. But is this what we wanted for Vito and Joe? More »

With any open world game you are going to get comparisons to the Grand Theft Auto series. If you populate that open world with gangsters (whether they be from the 1950s, current day, or the Wild Wild West) people are going to assume they are the same game. It adds further fuel to the flames when it rings true with titles like Saints Row. I want to set the record straight though, Mafia II is not a re-skinned Grand Theft Auto, it’s better, much better. I’ve been talking a lot about these cinematic shifts that occur throughout the Mafia II storyline. The first shift occurred when Vito was stripped from his urban environment and cast off to Sicily to fight in World War II. Next came the prison shift where we got a taste of what it was like in the can. The current shift we’re experiencing will change the look and feel of the game more than it ever has as we shift to the 1950’s. More »

Playing video games for long stretches of time is not my forte. I’m easily distracted and I have to bounce from one activity to another because I get bored quickly. Amazingly, I haven’t been able to pull myself away from Mafia II. In more ways than one, it’s like a movie that has you sitting on the edge of your seat aching to find out what happens next. Accompany me through what happened on day 2, all 5 hours of it. More »

With all the buzz swirling around about how cinematic Mafia II is I was a bit reluctant to go through all the effort my standard ritual for film watching entails. But I sucked it up, got my comfy pants on, thew a bag of JiffyPop into the microwave, and ripped open a bag of Reese’s Pieces. And boy was I sure glad I did! More »

The next big game on the release horizon is Mafia II by 2K Games. It’s scheduled to come out 8/24 for the PC, Xbox360, and PS3 for about $60 US. Bill recently did a phone conversation with their creative director which is a must read! My question to you guys is: If money wasn’t an object and you had all the time in the world to play it, would you buy Mafia II and if so for what system? More »
