With the release of No Doubt’s Tragic Kingdom on Rock Band’s store, I can’t help but feel the nostalgia of elementary school come flooding back. That album was on consistent spin for me when I was 11, and I distinctly remember that being the first time I started to think girls weren’t so bad. Ah, look at me. Now I have another tab open in Google Chrome and I am downloading Tragic Kingdom for the long drive ahead of me tonight. See what you do to me Rock Band? More »
Coheed and Cambria are one of my favorite bands ever. Unfortunately their new cd doesn’t live up to anything they put out previously, but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be fun to rock out to it. They are releasing three new tracks in the Rock Band store this coming week off their new album “Year of the Black Rainbow.” If anything, you should at least check out The Broken, because that song does indeed rule. We’ve all heard people complain about review scores, claiming that they are just one persons opinion and that the author is bias against the platform and so the fanboy story goes. But the reality is that review scores are a big deal. The higher a game rates on a score aggregator like Metacritic, the more likely we’ll see more from that game in the future. My question for you is, at what score do you NOT purchase the game? More »

In all honesty, 2009 was not the music game genre’s best year. With a market completely overflowing with options, nobody knew what to buy and sales dropped almost 50% from 2008. According to my calculations, there were eight games released just by the two major parties (Activision’s Guitar Hero series and Harmonix’s Rock Band series), and this is not even including karaoke games and any third party developed games that didn’t make a mark on the sales charts. Last year in 2008, music game’s exploded over anybodies expectations and sales soared above what many stock groups anticipated, so it’s completely understandable this year gave a drop. A Wedbush Morgan analyst expects the category will level off at about $500-$600 million dollars per year, which he called a “nice, healthy genre on par with the “Call of Duty” action-game franchise.” More »
RJ Cooper & Associates, Inc. specializes in software and hardware for persons with special needs. One of their newest inventions is a modified Guitar Hero guitar, adjusted to suit players who are unable to use their arms to manipulate the frets. The guitar is fitted with an attached Gumball Switch, a button that can be placed near the players head and pressed. When the device is engaged the guitar simulates a strum, allowing the physically challenged player to compete against their friends and family without actually having to hold the guitar and strum. The video-gaming industry has been booming. Sales are higher than they’ve ever been and everyone wants in. Major corporations have bought in: IGN.com is owned by the Fox corportation, Gamespot.com is owned by the CBS corporation and G4TV is a major subsidiary of Comcast. Now a truly gigantic media force, videogames are drawing in more players. Celebrities and musicians are getting into the mix, licensing their likenesses as characters in popular titles. Also joining the fray is the newly-revived comic industry, forming partnerships with many major developer’s flagship titles to provide companion literature or further insight to the game’s story. Alright, I made excuses for the developer when they announced “The Beatles: Rock Band“. I’ve got lots of respect for one of the most celebrated bands of all time.
But “Rock Band: Green Day”?.
That’s one title that I will gladly pass up.
Why would I do that you might be thinking? More »
DLC, or downloadable content, is a growing and major part of many games today. Some popular games include Borderlands(the recent release of Zombie Island), Halo, and Rock Band. This time, however, instead of announcing to you more DLC for a game, I have to sadly tell you about the discontinuation of DLC for a specific Rock Band franchise title. Rock Band Unplugged for the PSP will no longer have DLC available for it online.
The reason? MTV Games and Harmonix state that they More »
Rock Band has not officially announced any tracks that will be available on their Rock Band Network, a subset of DLC that will feature any artist that authors their own tracks. The program was announced back in July, with the public beta open soon after, in August. Since then we have only heard bits and pieces from a few specific indie labels working on tracking songs for the Network, Sub Pop Records being the most known label to publicize their affiliation. Luckily enough their forum members have been busy little bees contacting musicians and labels asking about their plans to work with RBN. Their efforts have payed off and the list of “confirmed” artists has been steadily growing. Harmonix developer HMXEnosity generously put together a thread on the official RB forums detailing every “confirmed” artist and their songs they plan on contributing. More »
